Miyako-jima (宮古島)

Miyako Island (referred to below as Miyako-jima) is one of the 160 islands of the Okinawa Island chain, and it is the fourth-largest island. Also, Miyako-jima is the biggest island of the Miyako Islands.
In the past, Miyako-jima was only known for its sugar cane. However, nowadays Miyako-jima is getting popular as a vacation destination for many Japanese people and tourists from around the world.
Miyako-jima is composed of 6 islands, which include Miyako, Irabu, Shimoji, Kurima, Ikema and Ogami. According to the official website of the City of Miyako Island, there were a total of approximately 55,000 people in Miyako-jima, which was only 3.75 % of Okinawa’s total population in 2020.
